About Dr. Christine Mitchell, D.O.

"To find health should be the object of the doctor.  Anyone can find disease." -- Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, founder of Osteopathy

Dr. Christine Mitchell has been practicing Osteopathic Medicine since 2003. She provides general Osteopathic services for all age groups.  Her specialty is in the practice of Traditional Osteopathy, using her hands to diagnose and treat imbalances in a patient both through the physical (i.e. functional anatomy and physiology), and through the emotional/psychological impact on a patient’s wellbeing. In line with Osteopathic Philosophy, she looks not only for Cause, but also for Health, and not liabilities, in each of her patients.

This unique form of medicine supports an individual through all stages of life, in growth and development and in dis-ease.

Dr. Mitchell has dual board certifications in both Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine / Osteopathic Manipulation (NMM/OMM), and in Family Medicine.  She received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in 2003.

While in medical school, Dr. Mitchell was awarded the prestigious scholarship, Angus Gordon Cathie, D.O. Memorial scholarship for excellence in Anatomy and Osteopathic Manipulation. She also was awarded the Paul Snyder, D.O. undergraduate fellowship in Anatomy and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.

She completed her family medicine residency at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was awarded honors in pediatrics, obstetrics and geriatrics. She completed her fellowship in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine.  She started a private practice in Auburn, Maine, seeing patients of all age groups. During her time in New England, she studied, table trained and lectured with the A Still Sutherland Study Group, which is grounded in Dr. W.G. Sutherland’s work through Dr. Anne Wales’s teachings.

Dr. Mitchell uses many Osteopathic modalities, but her primary focus in practice is through Biodynamics of Osteopathy, a modality of treatment that works with in-dwelling forces of growth and healing. These embryologic forces persist throughout life and serve to promote health and healing.  She started her Biodynamic journey with the founder of this specialty, Dr. James Jealous in 1998, and continued studying with him until his passing in 2021. She currently serves on the faculty for the Biodynamics of Osteopathy program.

As part of her dedication to the principles and practice of Osteopathy, she trains students, both nationally and internationally, through Osteopathic courses and workshops.  She is a faculty member of the Bavarian Pediatric School and Clinic for Traditional Osteopathy and has provided clinical services for the Osteopathic Children’s Clinic of Portland, Maine.

Dr. Mitchell also has advanced training with the Osteopathic Cranial Academy, the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation and the American Academy of Osteopathy.

Her love of Osteopathy and curiosity of Life have guided her to serve patients in some of the most beautiful areas in our country, both on the East and West coasts and in the Southwest.  She lives the Osteopathic philosophy and is committed to share it with her patients, students, family and friends.

When she is not practicing and studying Osteopathy, Dr. Mitchell can be found with her large extended family, or on excursions into the natural world in the forests, mountains, deserts and oceans across America, or dancing on a ballroom dance floor.
